Advantages

• Digital output voltage is obtained, and so there is no need to analog from digital conversion.
• Pulses of constant amplitude are available which simplify the electronic circuitry.

Disadvantages 

1. The lifespan of a light source is about 50,000 hours. So the light source needs to be replaced in time.
2. The accuracy of this method depends on the error represented by the unit pulse.
3. These errors can be minimized by using the gating period.
